What's the difference between a basic and multifunction printer?
A basic printer is designed solely for printing documents, and it’s typically more affordable, compact and easier to use. These are great for people who only need to print occasionally and don’t require extra features. A multifunction printer (MFP), also known as an all-in-one printer, includes additional functions like scanning, copying and sometimes faxing. These are popular in homes and offices where space is limited and multiple functions are needed in a single device. MFPs may cost a bit more upfront but are often more convenient and cost-effective than buying separate machines for each task. When choosing between the two, consider whether you’ll need to scan or copy documents regularly and whether you're working in a home office, family environment or business setting.
Do all printers come with ink or toner included?
Most new printers come with starter ink or toner cartridges, but these are typically lower capacity than standard replacements. Starter cartridges are meant to get the printer up and running, allowing for a limited number of prints. If you plan to do a lot of printing right away, you may need to purchase additional cartridges sooner than expected. Some models, particularly budget printers, have very small starter cartridges that can run out quickly. Checking what’s included in the box—and how many pages the included cartridges are expected to print—can help you avoid surprise costs after setup. It's also helpful to price out replacement cartridges before purchasing the printer, so you're prepared for future expenses.
What does "cost per page" mean when choosing a printer?
“Cost per page” is a useful way to measure how affordable a printer will be to run over time. It refers to how much it costs to print a single page, based on the price of the cartridge and the number of pages it can produce. To calculate it, divide the cost of the ink or toner cartridge by its page yield (the number of pages it’s rated to print). For example, if a cartridge costs $40 and yields 400 pages, the cost per page is 10 cents. Lower cost-per-page printers are more economical in the long run, especially for frequent printing. Comparing this metric when shopping can help you choose a printer that won’t surprise you with expensive refill costs.
